The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

A curving drive and layered plantings of spirea and hydrangea create a graceful approach to this refined white Georgian home, set on a raised knoll in a quiet, sunlit neighborhood. Echoing classic English formality, boxwood hedges, juneberry, espaliered crabapple, and pachysandra frame the architecture.

Bluestone paths connect distinct garden rooms, while sweeping lawns and purpleleaf wintercreeper unify the design. Benches, urns, staddle stones, and a fountain add rhythm and charm. A raised bluestone terrace and screened pavilion take advantage of the site’s elevation, with stone steps leading to an allée of Armstrong maples framed by lattice panels and perennial borders that balance structure and softness.

A Japanese-inspired garden provides a serene retreat, blending Midwestern plantings with traditional balance and restraint. Stones and raked sand evoke movement and harmony, extending the estate’s vision of Art in Harmony with Nature.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The Japanese garden a traditional stepping stone path that is difficult to traverse with mobility aids. However, the rest of the garden is largely accessible.
