The San Antonio Botanical Garden is thrilled to present the upcoming installment of the Ellie Selig Distinguished Garden Design Lecture Series on October 27, featuring one of the world's most acclaimed horticulturists, Fergus Garrett. Entitled Succession Planting: Layered Planting for a Long Season, this special event invites garden enthusiasts, landscape architects, and plant lovers to explore the technique and artistry behind long-season gardening.
As CEO of the Great Dixter Charitable Trust, Fergus Garrett has carried forward and expanded the legendary, dynamic planting traditions of Great Dixter in East Sussex, England. Renowned globally for his expertise in ornamental horticulture, ecology, and biodiversity, Garrett has dedicated his career to demonstrating how deeply considered, beautiful gardens can actively support native wildlife while delivering breathtaking visual impact.
During his lecture, Garrett will dive deep into the practical strategies used to extend a garden’s seasonal interest. Attendees will gain insight into how to orchestrate multi-layered, ever-changing plant combinations using structural shapes, contrasting textures, interplanting, bulbs, self-sowers, and strategic temporary fillers. The Ellie Selig Distinguished Garden Design Lecture Series honors the legacy of thoughtful garden-making by bringing forward-thinking ideas from world-renowned designers, landscape architects, and horticulturists to audiences across the nation. This event is presented in partnership with the Garden Conservancy, AIA San Antonio, and ASLA Texas.
The event, in the Betty Kelso Center at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, begins with a wine reception at 6 p.m., followed by the 6:30 p.m. lecture.
