Digging Deeper: Take a Walk on the Wild Side: Tour a Pollinator Meadow
East Lyme, CT
About
This Digging Deeper is presented in partnership with Pollinator Pathway East Lyme.
Our two-acre meadow was seeded in December of 2020 with a calculation of 40 to 60 seeds per square foot of native forbs and grasses.
It has grown into a vibrant ecosystem that provides food, habitat, and reproduction opportunities for insects and wildlife. On the tour, we’ll discuss site preparations, maintenance routines and techniques we learned over the past 5 years, including the identification and removal of invasive plant species.
Bring your camera! Dragonflies will do a fly-by, butterflies are photogenic and bumblebees ignore us but are so cute.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: Please wear sturdy boots or sneakers because the ground may be uneven in places. A baby stroller would have difficulty. Children are most welcome and we'll put them to work sowing seeds into the meadow during our walk. The meadow is in full sun for most of the day so please wear a hat.
For those folks who are thinking of reducing their lawns in create a small meadow, please bring paper to take notes.
