A Gardener's Garden

Montclair, NJ

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

This organic garden is an 18-year-long work in progress, designed as two informal, 150-foot-long perennial borders that line the 1897 house. Inspired by traditional English gardens, the borders feature both sun and shade plants.

The bluestone patio provides the perfect viewing area for the five-year-old crevice garden. From seed exchanges, I grow an array of unusual, low-growing alpine, xeric, and rock garden plants in crevices and handmade troughs.

The property also features a beautiful and functional custom-built cedar gardening shed. Nearby, the garage has been converted into a modified greenhouse with skylights and glass doors. It houses the alpine trough collection during the winter and is the perfect setting for starting seeds. The treescape includes a variety of unusual specimens, such as Camellia, Magnolia grandiflora, Acer griseum (paperbark maple), and Prunus serrula (birch bark cherry). Honeybees are the newest addition to the garden.

This garden’s estimated size is .35 acres.
