Wildwood Garden

Palos Park, IL

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

We’ve gardened at this house in the woods for 38 years. The one-acre garden includes an 80-foot-long border with annuals and perennials backed up by flowering shrubs.

Large limestone slabs lead visitors through a side garden that includes hostas, ferns, native ground covers and other perennials. A 55-by-22-foot vegetable garden features eight raised beds. A new eggplant-colored she shed/greenhouse with a patio provides a lovely place to sit and enjoy the views. Frequent visitors include woodpeckers, titmice, hummingbirds, pileated woodpeckers, and many other critters since we are surrounded by forest preserve.

The garden also includes more than 30 containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes designed for color, texture, and pollinators.

This garden's estimated size is 1 acre.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The ground slopes gently down to the very bottom of the backyard. There may be a few uneven spots so take care traversing the lawn.
