Steep Rocks Quarry
High Falls, NY
About
The last ice age left piles of Shawangunk conglomerate rock, which was manufactured into millstones. Countless trees grew up in between and were blown down due to their weak root systems.
In 1970 a driveway and house were built in one corner by a seasonal stream with a waterfall. It was an industrial site awaiting reclamation, zoned residential by the zoning gods.
In 1989 I bought the place because of its frontage on the Rondout Creek. I started moving rocks around and removing dead trees. I have a great fascination with identifying and understanding the properties of native wildflowers and weeds. Unfortunately as I have gotten older I forget their identity faster than I can identify them.
Two of my favorite trees are a Zelkova ‘Goshiki’ and a weeping katsura tree, whose skirt I have picked up.
