Hollows End
Gilsum, NH
About
Hollows End consists of rolling open meadows surrounded by forested hills. Beautiful in its own right, it has been a constant creative partner here along my garden making path. Heathers, some now 30 years old, share space with azalea, cotoneaster, 'Gold Cone' juniper, 'Ogon' spirea, perennials, and grasses.
Other naturally shaped gardens, some of which are on berms, wind their way around the house. The grotto—a recent addition—consists of a lotus bog, rain garden and dipping pool. Other highlights are the variety of stone features, many with huge boulders or slabs, 99% sourced from the land here.
Recent garden renovations have aimed to better connect the house, which sits up on a rise, to the land and vice versa. Two details help immensely—a large pergola,
which stretches out and down off the southwest side, and plantings that lean heavily toward native species, cultivars, and grasses.
This garden's estimated size is 3 acres.
