Garden of Jane Garmey

Cornwall, CT

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

This garden belongs to and was designed by garden writer Jane Garmey. It surrounds an 1827 Colonial house and is shielded from the road by a row of 250-year-old sugar maples and bordered by 19th century stone walls.

A fairly formal layout is combined with a largely informal planting scheme. Features include a rill and fountain fronted by a high hornbeam hedge, a boxwood gravel parterre, two long flower beds planted for drama and height, an enclosed picking garden intersected by old brick paths, a birdhouse village that floats above a glade of giant Petasites japonicus, and far too many potted succulents and container plants.
