The Stubenrauch Gardens
Glastonbury, CT
The Stubenrauch gardens flow naturally around the property under the high shade of mature oaks and white pines, with highlights of Glastonbury ledge. Areas range from bright light to deep shade, with the understory of small trees, shrubs, and perennials adding both vertical and horizontal dimensions. Evergreen and exfoliating deciduous plantings add year-round interest. The broad selection of plants also extends to bulbs, vines, ferns, ground covers, and container plantings, all of which provide both foliage and color all season long, attracting birds, bees, butterflies, and some less desirable mammals. While much of the garden is well established, having grown for more than twenty years, it is constantly expanded and renewed. The paver-block driveway and patio were added to better blend the hardscape with nature. Native and exotic plants look equally at home in the landscape, and small and large treasures have found a home in this plant-lovers garden, which delights at every turn of the winding pea stone and grass pathways.
