Oldgate
Farmington, CT
Historic garden, Woodland/shade garden
The historic garden at Oldgate was created as a pleasure garden in the early 1900s by Anna Roosevelt Cowles, President Theodore Roosevelt's sister. Anna's great-grandson and his wife currently maintain the acre and a half ornamental garden, which has been called a "green garden" emphasizing plant texture, shape, and character. It includes large swaths of traditional pachysandra and yew shrubs as well as newer perennial beds and the introduction of more native plantings. As an old garden, some of the trees on the property are Connecticut notable trees, giving the garden strong bone structure. Spring is a beautiful time in New England and to visit our garden–please come and enjoy it.
This garden's estimated size is 1½ acres.
