Fruit/vegetables, Organic/toxin-free, Woodland/shade garden
This all-organic garden, which has evolved over the last 27 years, is designed and entirely tended by its two self-taught owners, one of whom is a board member of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons. Eager to attract beneficial wildlife, the owners installed numerous birdbaths and flowers that attract pollinators. When deer began decimating the plantings, the owners rethought the design, fenced in the rear of the property, and dedicated the accessible front portion entirely to deer-resistant varieties, like the lengthy hedge of 'Hidcote' lavender that runs along the semicircular gravel driveway. At the same time, they "took back" the fenced-in rear garden, enjoyed blooms that had been deer-eaten for years, but also redesigned the space, continually adding new varieties. The garden is designed to provide blooms from February through November. A dedicated herb garden was recently expanded when the owners decided to grow other edibles, such as tomatoes, lettuce, green and yellow zucchini, and cucumber. Some are containerized to protect them from rabbits. Gourds are trained up the deer fence as ornamentals. Although this is mostly a sunny property, there are two shade gardens: one is a rear garden "room" for afternoon shade and entertaining. The other is a shady woodland garden along the front southeast border that features deer-resistant plants.
