Hedgleigh Spring
Swarthmore, PA
Hedgleigh Spring spans four generations of the Cresson family, beginning with the purchase of a "gentleman’s farm" by Ezra T. Cresson in 1883. The central feature of the current garden, designed and built by his son William, is an early twentieth-century flower garden. The flower garden is surrounded by
a series of garden rooms including shade gardens, a small naturalistic pond, a stream and waterfall, and a vegetable garden. An old springhouse sits beneath towering old oak and black gum trees among large plantings of azaleas and camellias. The utilization of the varied microclimates of this garden has lead to a large and varied plant collection. Charles Cresson, the current owner, is author of three books on gardening, a lecturer and consultant.
