The Stone Sphere
Pepperell, MA
About
For twenty-five years, the owner has transformed a former cow pasture on the old Nichols farmland into a tranquil garden sanctuary. Inspired by the Knockan Crag Globe in Scotland, the owner crafted a stone sphere that stands as the garden's centerpiece and inspired the title of their recent book. This sphere, representing self-integrity, cohesion, and spirituality, embodies John Ruskin's belief that true art unites "hand, head, and heart." The garden unfolds through a series of meticulously designed spaces: a crab apple allée, New England stone walls, and a farmer’s pond. Trimmed hedges of taxus and boxwood create "rooms" to discover, each with its own personality - a European vegetable garden, a contemplative Zen fruit garden, and a tranquil water feature. Teak benches offer places for rest and conversation, while a formal bluestone patio and pergola-covered deck provide panoramic views of the rolling landscape and water.
This garden’s estimated size is 2 acres.
