The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

We purchased this 40-acre 1928 property in May 2023. It has been our goal to resurrect and expand the original garden design behind the house.

We hired world-renowned designer Stephen Sills to help execute a design plan that included resurrecting a formal rose garden, construction of a formal hornbeam hedge garden with reflecting pool and a 1-acre bi-level expansion of the original garden design.

The property had been neglected for years. We wanted to bring back the formality of a proper English garden to complement the English Country Colonial design of the 8,000-square-foot house.

Boxwoods and espalier Red Delicious apple trees only add to the formality. Specimen trees punctuate the property including GIANT linden, beech and ginkgo biloba trees among others. Subtle lighting and hidden speakers for music were installed to help enhance the peaceful and meditative quality we desired.

Behind the renovated 10 stall horse barn we installed a chicken coop, berry boxes and raised vegetable garden. We wanted to create a fun garden space that we could work with our 8-year-old twins. We love to harvest vegetables for cooking and juicing.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: For behind main house, it is all flat bluestone with areas there is one step to go up or down. A lovely even path with no more than one step would allow a good tour of part of garden. However, the horse barn, vegetable garden and chicken coop are not wheelchair friendly. Please see the Garden Hosts if you would like mobility assistance.
