South Boulder Rock Garden - Saturday, June 20 Open Day, Session 1: 10am–1pm
Boulder, CO
About
The front garden of this narrow lot has been mounded and includes pink-hued, local rocks that harmonize with the Flatirons just to the west.
This garden was created for growing and displaying small alpine plants, with an emphasis on texture and combinations of plants of different scales. Modeled on a traditional-style rock garden, this streetside area offers displays of blooming alpines and bulbs during spring and summer.
Favorite plants include daphnes, gentians, silver saxifrages, dwarf conifers and dianthus. Narrow beds flanking a stepped pathway that runs along the south side
of the house are adorned with many of the garden’s several hundred pots, which mostly contain tender succulents and tropicals, especially bromeliads.
At the far end of this passage-garden is a deck that offers unimpeded views to the south and west of the Flatirons and Boulder’s open space. The back garden along the west side of the lot has many trough gardens and large potted agaves and other succulents.
The backyard planted area, which is xeric and watered no more than once or twice a year, is filled with yuccas, agaves and eremurus, along with seasonal blooming plants.
This garden’s estimated size is 0.15 acre.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: Access to the garden is along uneven flagstone paths and includes steps up and down.
