Rumford Hall
Brewster, NY
About
Rumford Hall is a 15-acre property with mature plantings and monumental boulders in the foothills of the Appalachians. A stone table near the perennials is engraved with the date of the house, 1879, and a smokehouse huddles under greenery in a courtyard garden with an old, weathered door.
We have boxwood and roses, a crabapple allée, weepery, pergolas, orchard, vegetable garden, fernery, and a pool garden with succulents and grasses. Fences are lined with ninebark, honeysuckle, and tapestry hedges.
Stone steps and staircases lead to the ruins on the hill and a woodland room enclosed by stone walls. Visitors are encouraged to follow the trails that we have signposted in the hills. The forest has a footbridge and a stone staircase leading to a mossy mountaintop.
Garden Extra: The Garden Host has included an illustrated “Explorer’s Map” to guide young gardeners on their adventure down the paths of Rumford Hall.
This garden's estimated size is 15 acres (including woodland trails).
