About

Our garden was designed in the 1920s by the noted landscape architect Clarence Fowler, who also designed the nearby Cross estate gardens. The residence, designed concurrently by architect Eugene Mason of Carrère and Hastings, was built to serve as his own home. At one of the highest points of the Bernardsville mountain the garden enjoys great distant views.

Arriving through an antique iron gate, one arrives at the formal lawn framed by a gravel path and privet hedge. The path leads you to a spectacular rhododendron allée ending at an ancient statue. Up the brick steps you arrive at the boxwood parterre and the rose and perennial border. Another flight of steps leads you to the pool, terrace and twin pavilions backed by ancient rhodendron and a fountain, all designed by landscape architect Walter Carell.

Follow the gracefully curved railing and stepping stones through the shade garden, to the gate opening to the bridle path leading to the stone tower circa 1923. We are only the second owner of the property of 32 acres, which we have placed in conservation.

This garden's estimated size is 32 acres and is in conservation.
