Lothrop and Dimock Garden
Dedham, MA
About
We have renovated our laborers’ cottage— designed in the farmhouse style—over the past twenty years. While playing with our children, we transformed a sea of asphalt and overgrown trees, shrubs, and weeds to create a fertile oasis.
In 2020, the original herb and a fenced vegetable garden were expanded with the addition of ornamental beds. Guided by painters’ design principles and inspired by gardens in New England and beyond, we choose plantings primarily for their color and texture.
More recently, we’ve incorporated native species and have embraced organic practices—creating a traditional
cottage garden with a touch of deliberate chaos. It’s a relaxed, mostly shaded lot surrounded by trees, with perennial beds tracing the path of the sun. Beyond the boxwood spheres, a little mowable meadow transitions into the wooded landscape beyond our yard, where turkeys and their poults peck about near the Boston line.
This garden's estimated size is 0.5 acre.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The pea gravel patio and some uneven stepping stones may be challenging for some visitors with limited mobility.
