Loblolly Cottage

About
In the heart of Eastport, Annapolis, is a jewel box garden. Located on a small corner lot with mature trees and filtered sunlight, this densely and thoughtfully planted garden envelops the cottage style house and carriage house. From the front gate following a brick pathway past a carved granite bubbling fountain and cozy sitting area, a venerable Japanese maple shelters an outdoor dove cage. Choice perennials and shrubs nestle in on either side. The rear garden area features a large flagstone patio with a beautifully designed rectangular fishpond with multi-hued goldfish overlooked by a graceful back porch. Beneath the porch is an artfully planted antique French farm trough. A weeping katsura tree anchors the south-facing carriage house entrance with Camellias and Ilex shrubs, Hydrangeas and Euphorbias. It echoes the young purple leaf katsura at the corner of the house. Down steps from the raised patio along a low seating wall is a pea gravel path leading under an elegantly planted pergola to the focal point of a large planted urn and the driveway gate. Clematis and climbing roses enhance the fence and gate arch. The garden continues along the alley way and around the east side of the property along Lockwood Court with a selection of choice evergreen perennials. Tall river birches shelter another aviary with merrily cooing Australian doves and sitting area inside the garden. This is still a young garden, but the warm feeling of maturity is a testament to the horticultural skills of the garden owners. This garden jewel box is truly enchanting!
This garden’s estimated size is 7,000 sq. ft.
