About

I really like wild, natural places, so my garden is an effort to create that in the suburbs. I plant densely to mimic the wildness of West Marin, where I grew up. It’s also a great laboratory for my work as a garden designer.

I love California native Atriplex lentiformis with its crazy silvery brambleness that is a beast and grows large and dense with little water. Sphaeralcea, Salvia, and Muhlenbergia rigens are also low-water California natives that create a “lush” feel if planted densely and occasionally cut back.

The Eichler home was designed by famed architects A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons as one of thousands built by Joseph Eichler. The Mid-century Modern house is boxy in shape with walls of floor- to-ceiling windows that face the back garden. The garden is a foil for the house, a wild, naturalistic planting that contrasts the very simple architecture. Because of the walls of glass, you feel like you are in the garden when you are inside going about your day.

This garden's estimated size is 13,000 sq ft.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The garden is flat but most the paths are loose gravel.
