Kyle-Lasseter Garden

Houston, TX

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

The garden of Dillon Kyle and Sam Lasseter is tucked away at the end of a small private street in the heart of Houston's Museum District. Created by the pair when they built their house almost 15 years ago, the garden is defined by its casual nature, its fluid palate of perennials and ferns, and its gradual transition over time from primarily sun to a largely shady garden as its trees have grown in and matured.

Dillon, an architect and founder of Dillon Kyle Architects, designed the house—in what may be Houston's smallest designated historic district—in a vernacular style that sits comfortably into its surroundings, belying its contemporary interior. The heart of the garden, which includes a pool, a serpentine brick wall and brick walkways, is created from the space between two independent structures that comprise the home. Dillon and Sam's garden also includes a large number of potted plants, a strategic response to the abundance of shade, but also an opportunity to introduce a lively and idiosyncratic array of pots and pedestals, some of which Dillon has created himself—raucous, joyous conglomerations of shards, smallish stones, or whatever else he can get his hands on. Dillon and Sam have arranged these pots and pedestals in a delightful jumble, adding another layer of visual pizzazz to an otherwise stately setting.
