About

This Open Day is presented in partnership with Keep Pueblo Beautiful.

KnappHaus is a 6-year-old garden designed, installed, and maintained by the homeowner/landscape architect. It surrounds a historic home, and as you encircle the home you pass through multiple microclimates. These microclimates aford the use of a variety of hardy plants for Colorado. All plants are labeled with zinc markers. The SE front garden is home to magnolia, euonymus, daphne, and hydrangea, with boxwood bridging the gap to the NE corner of native xeric plants, including ‘Blonde Ambition’ blue grama grass, ‘Dark Knight’ spirea, and Manzanita. Rain chains at the porch downspouts are intermittent water features, and the porch swing is both sculpture and function. The cedar fence is stained blue/grey and is a nice contrast to the garden plants. Through the east gate, you enter the backyard along the brick walk to see the south lawn, perennial beds, and rectangular duck pond. Window boxes were added here and along the alley windows. Columnar junipers and a white rose hedge provide a clean backdrop along the far side of the lawn and will eventually screen along the south fence line. A custom granite fountain is both a focal point and a popular birdbath. The brick patio is sized for dining and seating for the firepit. The chicken coop is tucked at the south end of the patio and the chicken run is behind the garage. Turning the corner a DIY kitchen space with grill and pizza oven is under the pergola. Up on the back porch, a bar-height counter and stools add another eating area. Between the house and rear property line is a concrete driveway; this was softened by the installation of the greenhouse and 7 raised veg beds. The concrete is also handy for the outdoor ping pong table. The mural beyond is a backdrop for the succulent benches: a fun collection of Aeoniums, Senecio, Echeveria, and Sedums. These plants overwinter in the heated greenhouse. As you continue around the house at the north gate you pass hops, blackberries, and a Montmorency cherry. Along the alley, the garden is xeric with upright junipers, sumac, yuccas, and sedums.

This garden’s estimated size is 7,500 sq. ft.
