About

This Open Day is presented in partnership with Oudolf Garden Detroit.

This Gentleman’s townhouse garden features hardscape as well as landscape. Upon entry one passes a low brick wall which encloses the front garden from the street. The property lines are defined by a Hicks Yew hedge. Surrounding the chip seal driveway is a clipped canopy of Little Leaf Lindens. Below the trees is Purple Wintercreeper or Pachysandra. In front of the wall along the sidewalk are seasonal flowers, now White Begonia. Granite curb outlines the drive and provides a step up to the Bluestone walk leading to the front door. The foundation consists of a Winter Gem Boxwood border inclosing matched Miss Kim Lilacs on standard with Green Carpet Pachysandra and Halcyon Hosta under. Also matching beds of Japanese Blue Holly trimmed in Boxwood. Next to the garage is a small gravel path edged in granite leading to the rear yard. As the path continues behind the garage one notices a Baltic Ivy trellis. A Boxwood border surrounds a mass of Hydrangea. Then leading to columnar ginkgos with Pantageana Hosta at base. The path stops at the dining terrace with built-in barbecue against a brick screen wall to conceal A/C units. Select bluestone was used for all paved surfaces. It features color match and thermal finish. The gravel path continues around a small pond with limestone coping containing a stone fountain all surrounded by a boxwood mass. The Ivy trellis is repeated on the house wall. Path ends at a second Bluestone Terrace off the sunroom. The wooded fence also has Ivy trellis with Coralburst Crabs and ornamental grass. The rear property line of the house is screened by Emerald Green Arborvitae hedge layered with boxwood hedge and with a Myrtle bed at base. The final feature of the rear yard is the lawn panel which is completely surrounded by a Bluestone border that ties the terraces to the whole yard.

This garden's estimated size is 5000 sq. ft.
