Glade Garden—Abby Jane Brody
East Hampton, NY
About
A layered garden planted for year-round interest has been carved in the shade of the native woodland of Springs. From snowdrops and crocuses, wintersweet, witch hazels, and the odd camellia in January, to autumn camellias and fragrant Osmanthus in December, something is flowering almost every day. After the minor bulbs and mosaic of corydalis in late winter, the ground level is carpeted with wood anemones and woodland phlox. In early May comes a climax of primulas, hellebores, epimedium, and species peonies. The understory trees and shrubs, too, flower throughout the seasons: spring-blooming camellias, daphnes, and fragrant rhododendron are followed by a progression of hydrangeas, collections of Japanese maples, stewartia and clethra, crape myrtles, and new treasures like the purple-leaved styrax, Chinese trumpet vine, and a gordlinia that flowers from August through November.
This garden’s estimated size is 1/2 acre.
