Our Mediterranean style home, built in 1926, is located in the highest part of the Washington Highlands neighborhood, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Our home, also on the National Register, is a pastiche of many Mediterranean influences including a red tile roof, heavily carved wooden garage doors, an outdoor staircase and patio, archways, niches, and inlaid terra cotta panels and brick patterning. Like many Mediterranean gardens, ours has two water features, a traditional wall fountain and a small pond edged with a cascading Lannon stone wall, a native Wisconsin material used in many of the walls in the Washington Highlands. Our gardens are a source of joy and wonder for us. Over the years we have redesigned and replanted many of the gardens, including adding the stone walkway and terraced wall garden in the backyard. We love the naturalized plants, which reseed and thrive in the background. When we bought our home twenty years ago, our backyard was sunny. Fast-forward to today, the trees have matured, and their canopy fully shades our backyard. We therefore have had to transplant, move or redesign the beds, which means our yard has been in a state of change throughout the years. Our backyard is an oasis of secluded privacy just beyond the highways and byways of urban living. Enjoy the creative plantings and subtle screening from the world around as you traverse our yard and take in the beauty.
This garden’s estimated size is 1/4 acre.
