Garden of Nancy & Pierre Moitrier
Annapolis, MD
About
Beneath a magical chandelier-clad tree house perched 15 feet above the earth lies a garden defined by reclaimed brownstone architectural building elements and rustic cedar structures, and embellished with French antiquities. At its core, this is a plant-driven garden, but with design finesse, the plant collections are sufficiently cohesive to comfort the amateur gardener yet entertain the passionate horticulturist. Numerous garden rooms of diverse character and utility are accented with specimen conifers and carpeted with all types and sizes of groundcover. Towering native trees enlarge the dimensions of this garden, while layers of shrubs and drifts of flowering perennials from various ecotypes lure a diversity of birds and beneficial insects-a critical raison d'etre. Climbing roses, tropical plants and bulbs for all seasons add another layer to this jam-packed 1/3-acre corner lot. A series of imposing stepping stones lure garden visitors through a small rock garden, past the cedar-fenced vegetable garden, and into the heart of the garden, where a stone seating wall presides over a collection of imported antique stone troughs filled with special plants, water, or simply left untouched to reveal the beauty of the craftsmanship of the past. A Japanese-inspired garden shed is filled with heritage tools and containers, antique sprinklers and the usual suspects for garden making and keeping.
This garden's estimated size is 1/3 acre.
