Garden at Dr. Vincent Le Seigneur House

Charleston, SC

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

This large 3-1/2 story Adamesque-style house built in 1812 with two south-facing piazzas has been recently restored together with a new garden designed by Ables Landscapes of Charleston.

One enters the garden by either entering the piazza or by a small gate directly into the garden. A series of three gardens greets the visitor with the first garden including a trickling three-tiered fountain surrounded by sasanquas, liriopes, hostas and seasonal plantings in urns.

A slate chip path leads to the second garden with its formal design of two rectangles encircling African iris planted among seasonal plantings and one square enclosing a large terra cotta planter with a Japanese maple and cascading Plectranthus. Boxwoods line the paths and on the south side a shrub border abounds with camellias, sasanquas, azaleas, hydrangeas and ferns, all shade lovers.

The sunny northern side of the garden has African iris, liriope, agapanthus, and exuberant ajuga covering small bluestone steps leading to the piazza. White roses planted at the base of old iron stanchions will climb their way to the top and create the covering for a future gazebo.

Surrounding the pool is a terrace garden with large split-leaf philodendron, sasanquas, Farfugium, liriope, azaleas, and Bracken’s Brown Beauty magnolias standing guard underneath a live oak tree. A charming restored pool house to the north provides the exit to the parking court.

Old wisteria winds around iron posts furnishing a spectacular display each late spring and a green cover thereafter.
