Digging Deeper: Roses Along the River -
A Tour of the Gardens of the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk
The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo was born out of the community’s desire to redevelop and revitalize downtown Pueblo, CO. The massive flood in 1921 left great devastation to the entire downtown and the Arkansas River was redirected to a levy system just to the west. In 1996, voters approved the project to construct the Riverwalk which allowed part of the waters of the Arkansas River back to its original path through downtown.
The Riverwalk design laid the groundwork for horticultural projects, sculpture displays, murals, and fountains. Gardens flanking the Riverwalk Channel have their own story and uniqueness.
We will target some of the larger gardens on the Riverwalk and meet with the Riverwalk Rose Society; the local chapter of the American Rose Society, for a Digging Deeper presentation. The Rose Society will discuss their activities, rose varieties and tips for growing roses in our semi-arid, high plains climate.
