Digging Deeper: American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project
Katonah, NY
About
This Digging Deeper is presented in partnership with Lasdon Park, Arboretum, and Veterans Memorials.
Since 1991, Lasdon Park and Arboretum has been home to one of the American Chestnut orchards of The American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project. In this program, a researcher will dig deep into the progress to date of American Chestnut and blight resistance research. One unique finding occurred in July 2023 when the rare Chestnut Miner Bee was observed in Lasdon's American Chestnut orchard. A bee that hasn't been observed in New York State since 1904. This program should coincide with the bloom of the American Chestnut trees and possibly provide a glimpse of the rare bee. This is a unique opportunity that merges research to horticulture and the field of ecological restoration.
