Digging Deeper: 250 Years of History at the Mather Homestead
Darien, CT
About
This Digging Deeper is presented in partnership with The Mather Homestead.
Come celebrate America250 at The Mather Homestead’s 1778 House, Darien’s only registered national historic landmark!
Home to six generations of Mathers, the property reflects the history of the family, the region, and the country. It transitioned from a 100-acre self- sustaining farm owned by Deacon Joseph Mather; to a post-industrial summer estate with manicured gardens owned by industrialist, conservationist and the first Director of the National Park Service, Stephen Mather; to the family home of one of Connecticut’s first female architects, Bertha Mather.
The home was transferred to the newly created Mather Homestead Foundation in 2017 to be preserved as a museum dedicated to historic education. Since that time, the Foundation has restored the gardens and the entire property has been beautified.
Take a step back in time on this beautiful property on Darien’s “four corners” where history was made.
