Brae Willows

Brae Willows, a 1-acre garden, began its infancy in June 1967 as an open, barren piece of land with three rhododendrons and a smattering of mature trees. It was completely designed and planted by the owner, who also helps with the maintenance.

The division of the property by a small seasonal creek, which winds its way through to the Mianus River bordering the back of the property, created the biggest challenge to the owner. Unifying the two sides was accomplished through careful use of trees, shrubs, and bridges.

Because of the river, the water table is in places only several feet from the surface of the ground. Careful planning was needed to use plant material that was visually stimulating without having it look like wetlands.

The varied and extensive use of conifers makes for seclusion, surprise, serenity, and year-round beauty. There is no downtime here. Meticulous attention has been paid to detail. Arbors and five natural stone garden paths leave you wondering what lies beyond. Ornate iron gates beckon your entry. A secluded patio, bird baths, and cement and decorative iron planters add to the total enchantment. Benches, strategically placed, beg you to linger awhile.

Three bridges invite you across the creek. Walk under an iron arbor, down a stone path flanked by a perennial and shrub garden, open a small picket gate, and you find yourself looking at a view of the river.

Curved stone walls gently frame the two patios, and a large stone arbor welcomes you into the main part of the garden.

A high Tsuga hedge frames the gravel driveway. A new “hidden garden” was created in 2021. Though small in size—10 feet wide by 90 feet long—it is filled with diversified hardscape elements and tall, narrow Taxus.

This captivating and tranquil setting brings a sense of peacefulness. A vista of the gardens can be seen from the covered porch.
