About
Tucked away from view, behind a street-side wall, hides a secret desert garden. This little oasis is complete with native fan palms, a mesquite, three large ocotillos, mature barrel cacti, and an assortment of native and site-specific desert plants. What was originally a dirt yard now has rose hued concrete paths, raised beds, and a fountain all inviting the visitor to relax, enjoy the views, and listen to the birds. A large center bed mimics the nearby hills and canyons with cacti, chollas, creosote, milkweed, beaver tails, regional rocks, and an assortment of annuals sourced from seeds collected throughout the Sonora desert. The surrounding beds are a mix of native and drought tolerant plants in part chosen to keep the resident hummingbirds happy. The overall effect is a desert impressionist painting. This primarily native plant garden has an eye focused on beauty as well as providing a home for wildlife. Some native gardens mimic the seemingly anarchic feel of the natural world but this highly curated garden strives for a balance between creating a naturalistic setting while celebrating the beauty of individual plants, groupings, wildlife, and reveling in the jubilant spirit of spring in the Colorado desert.
