Steepletop—Poet Edna St. Vincent Millay's Garden

Steepletop—Poet Edna St. Vincent Millay's Garden

Austerlitz, NY

Pulitzer-prize winning poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay’s home Steepletop, named for the wildflower found in its high fields, served the poet in very unique ways. This secluded sanctuary provided Millay with space to create gardens that satisfied her earth-ecstatic nature and gave her endless inspiration for some of her most beloved work. Over the twenty-five years that Millay lived at Steepletop she wrote volumes of poetry and created a series of garden rooms, a kitchen garden, and a spring-fed pool with an adjoining outdoor bar dubbed the ruins where she could entertain her guests. Though some of these features are in various stages of restoration, they all can be toured and appreciated by today's visitors to Steepletop.
