Joel Lane Museum House & Garden

Raleigh, NC

The Joel Lane Museum House is an important heritage site of statewide significance. It was the home of Col. Joel Lane, a Revolutionary War patriot, who sold 1,000 acres of his land to the State of North Carolina in 1792 for the location of the capital city, Raleigh. Built in 1769, Joel Lane's house is the oldest house in Wake County and a jewel of Georgian mid‐Atlantic colonial‐style architecture. It was fully restored and furnished in the 1970s and is open for tours led by costumed docents. The site consists of three buildings and colonial revival‐style gardens with period‐appropriate herbs, fruit trees, and other plants. The circa 1790 "Kitchen" building is a middle class dwelling that was moved from northern Wake County in 1979. The house is part of a historic site managed by a non‐profit corporation, the Joel Lane Museum House, Inc., and is owned by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of North Carolina.
