Digging Deeper: Unearthing the Stories of Sylvester Manor
Sat, Jul 30, 2022
10:00 AM-11:30 AM
Join Donnamarie Barnes, curator and archivist of Sylvester Manor, and planner Sara Gordon, for a walking tour of the core of this unique northern plantation remnant, owned by a single family of European descent from 1651-2014. Donnamarie and Sara will describe the challenges inherent in this cultural landscape of great historic significance, where interpretive and restoration opportunities are weighted with a wealth of archaeological and archival materials, extant and yet to be unearthed; and a dearth of references to those who toiled here. The tour will include the 2-acre formal garden whose establishment is believed to date back to the 1650s, and a burial ground of indentured, enslaved and free people of color where study is underway in partnership with indigenous descendants of Long Island's First Peoples.
Please note that this tour will include about a half mile of walking over uneven ground. Closed-toe walking shoes are recommended, as well as insect repellent, which will be available at registration.
