Digging Deeper: Rooted in Place—An Architect's Garden in the Country - SOLD OUT

Hyland/Wente Garden

Sun, Jun 20, 2021
4:00 PM- 6:00 PM

About twenty years ago, in the low, rolling hills of the Taconic Range overlooking Indian Mountain and Indian Lake, architect Larry Wente set about creating a home. The resulting Hyland/Wente Garden has been a visitor favorite since its first Open Day in 2005. Join Larry for a very special garden walk as he shares insights into his design process as well as specific techniques he used to root his home in place, linking house and garden as well as garden and larger agrarian landscape. The mass plantings, varied grid, and occasional strong verticals of the garden suggest the patterns of the surrounding agricultural fields and farm complexes. Emphasizing grasses, textures, colors, and plant combinations, the gardens blend with surrounding wildflower meadows and orchard, and are designed for interest in all seasons.
