Lagniappe Garden
Roxbury, CT
Garden structure/sculpture, Woodland/shade garden
This 25-year-old informal garden, designed to flow with the Connecticut hillside contours of an old cow pasture and stone walls, has densely planted borders on winding pebble paths. Beyond the Greek Revival–style house's patio, the main garden curves toward a classical temple folly surrounded by the vegetable beds and the cutting garden. Uphill is the apple orchard; downhill, a Nyssa sylvatica allée with a Mazus reptans path ends with a Sissinghurst-inspired stone sofa. Below, the garden opens to a field with specimen trees: Taxodium distichum (baldcyress), Oxydendrum (sourwood), Cercidiphyllum japonicum (katsura), and Chionanthus virginicus (white fringetree).
This garden's estimated size is 1½ acres.
