New York’s Private Gardens Open to the Public, July 27
Garrison, NY — Seven private gardens in Sullivan County will be open for public visitation as part of the Garden Conservancy Open Days Program.™ The Sullivan County gardens will open on Saturday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Sullivan County gardens on July 27 include:
Sally's Garden in Barryville, NY. There are two distinct ornamental gardens, one 30 years in the making, the other more recently developed, both designed and created by the owner. They are intimate, planted on less than a quarter of an acre on a historic 12-acre farm property. The gardens include an impressive collection of trees and flowering shrubs, along with a wide range of herbaceous perennials for shade and sun, all with an emphasis on both native as well as fragrant and pollinator plants.
297 and 298 in Jeffersonville, NY. The garden includes a large number of pollinator species and a wide variety of native and non-native plants appropriate for the area. The 297 house is Victorian, built as a boarding house in the late 1800s. The backyard features a field of wildflowers a different bloom every few weeks throughout the season.
Shady Fox Farm in Jeffersonville, NY. A 100-foot serpentine stone wall is the backdrop for a mixed herbaceous border. The pool garden consists of a collection of summer flowering trees, shrubs, and perennials.
Old Danzer Farm in Livingston Manor, NY. Print maker Madeline Jones and her husband, Kit Jones, a photographer, created the garden over 35 years. Serpentine fieldstone walls frame the view to pond. Island beds, planted with perennials and shrubs. Ornamental grass collection at pond.
Woodsndale in Mountain Dale, NY. Woodsndale has decorative gardens with more than 80 varieties of plantain lilies, many Asiatic hybrid lilies, varieties of hydrangeas, and much more. From spring to fall, Woodsndale is a pollinator's paradise and home to wild bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and, yes, ground hogs, and a herd of deer.
Grateful Beds in North Branch, NY. The raised bed garden is 450 square feet, with about twenty complementary varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, including milkweed for the beloved butterflies.
Yaun Farm in Youngsville, NY. Yaun Farm includes a farm house and 20 acres of gardens with an open vista to the pond and the hemlock and laurel woods. All new plantings revolve around the deer, with mixed borders of spirea boxwood and calycanthus shrubs, planted with epimediums, hellebores, hardy geraniums, and astilbes.
