Garden Preservation Handbook
Taking a Garden Public
—Resource handbooks from The Garden Conservancy
Volume 1: Feasibility and Startup
Volume 2: Fund Raising and Development
Is there a garden in your life? Is it in danger of being lost—to developers, dwindling care, or lack of proper leadership? This preservation series has been written and designed to introduce you to the steps involved in saving America’s gardens—steps that you can take to determine whether it is feasible for your project to become a public garden and, if so, how to proceed.
The first volume, Feasibility and Startup, provides valuable information to anyone working to preserve gardens. Experts in the field of garden preservation have contributed more than 100 pages of advice on how to form a Friends group, find the right partners, slog through the legalities of incorporating and obtaining nonprofit status, and navigate the straits of strategic planning. Case studies of Garden Conservancy preservation projects tell the stories of successful grass roots efforts. Various public sites have also contributed sample documents, such as mission statements, bylaws, and Articles of Incorporation. The second volume in the series, Fund Raising and Development, will illuminate the ins and outs of fund raising. This handbook is aimed at small, often new, organizations that are faced with having to raise funds to operate and sometimes to save or restore a garden.
The handbooks are in loose-leaf format and are available at $25 each (plus $5.00 shipping and handling for each handbook). To place an order please fill out and print the order form and mail or fax to the Preservation Projects department, or call (845) 265-9396.
